KUALA LUMPUR: The cost of the Prime Minister and his deputy’s official delegations during trips have increased by 75.2% since 2008 to more than RM9.8mil this year.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said that the cost of the delegations in 2008 was RM5,597,583, and rose to RM6,041,934 in 2009 and RM9,807,310 this year.
“The total number of officers involved between 2008 and Oct 12 this year was 1,102 people involving a total cost of RM21,446,828,” he said in a written reply.
Nazri also said that the operating and development expenditure of departments and agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department rose from RM4.3bil in 2006 to RM10.2mil in 2009.
The expenditure in 2007 and 2008 was around RM6.9mil for each year, while this year, RM8.1mil had been spent by the Prime Minister’s Department as at Sept 30.
“The allocation and expenditure by the offices of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister are part of the activities placed under general administration on the Prime Minister’s Department.
“The expenses occurred by those offices are under the general expenses of general administration,” he said.
The expenses incurred under general administration from 2006 to 2009 were RM460mil, RM629mil, RM777mil and RM637mil respectively, while RM452mil had been spent until Sept 30 this year.
Tian Chua (PKR-Batu), who posed the questions to Nazri, questioned the drastic jump in the expenditure incurred by official delegations after Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took over the helm of the country.
“Comparing the spending pattern between Abdullah and Najib, between 2008 and 2010, the expenditure increased by 75.2%,” he said.
He pointed out that between 2008 and 2009, the expenses incurred by the official delegations rose by 7.94%, and between 2009 and 2010 rose by 62.32%.
